PARTNERSHIPS SAVE THE LIVES OF CHILDREN WITH CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS IN BRAZIL

Jun. 12, 2024 | Bahia, Brazil

In celebration of Brazil Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Day, which takes place on June 12th, we did a partnership with Hospital Santa Izabel, which is located in Bahia, Brazil, to execute a Little Heroes campaign.
Through Abbott’s life-changing technologies and products, we can change the way patients are treated when the battle conditions that they have historically meant an unfavorable prognosis.
Little Heroes exists since 2020 and has already provided an improvement in the quality of life for more than 80 children by June 2024.
See below the story of 2 children – Alice and Davi – who received cardiac treatment thanks to Abbott Little Heroes, which supported these procedures, providing technologies that transforms lives.

ALICE

Alice lives with her grandmother Edilene and her sister Mirela. She was always calm, sweet and had a good academic performance. However, in 2018, the grandmother noticed the girl was short breath, her breathing was uneven, and she was fatigued when playing. They went to the pediatrician, who immediately referred her to the cardiologist, who identified the problem: Patent Duct Arteriosus (PDA).

The cardiological problem – which prevented her from practicing physical activities – causes significant hemodynamic changes in the systemic pulmonary circulation of premature babies from the first days of life. The larger the diameter of the channel, the lower the systemic blood flow and the greater the pulmonary blood flow.

Almost 3 years passed living in a limited way until Alice was able to undergo a minimally invasive procedure, carried out at the Hospital Pedro Ernesto, in Rio de Janeiro.

Her recovery was great, and, with that, Alice was able to dream again of what she loved most, being a football player. Today, Alice plays football happily and doesn’t get tired pf playing much.

DAVI

Born in the countryside of the Brazilian state of Parana, Davi, 8 years old, is an active boy, full of energy, dreams and who loves riding horses, but a congenital heart disease often left him tired. Even so, according to his mother, Vanessa Motter de Souza, “he is always talkative, happy boy, we never see him sad”.

It took 7 years, going from specialist to specialist ever 6 months, waiting in the surgical queue for a long time. But through Little Heroes, he performed the procedure that requires a short hospital stay and, best of all, is minimally invasive.

After the procedures, Davi gained a better quality of life, more self esteem and more physical resistance. In other words, he can do the activities he enjoys, such as riding with his family.
