Little Heroes Campaign helps children receive heart procedures at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital

On the 29th of July, Thato, our first little hero got a non-surgical closure of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The surgery was performed in the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) in Johannesburg, South Africa, where they now hope to be able to treat more children with this life-threatening disease.

Abbott’s Little Heroes Campaign has supported the heart procedures at the Nelson Mandela Children’s hospital, by providing life-changing technologies.

Head of Cardiology, Prof Hopewell Ntsinjana, welcomed guests and said that NMCH will work with colleagues from the within the hospital’s referral network. “Today is a great day for NMCH’s Cardiology Department’s Cathlab. Throughout the week we will be performing procedures to fix heart defects in children, working together with colleagues from Chris Hani Baragwanath and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital and with the support from our partners at Abbott.”

The Little Heroes and their parents are happy to return to their homes after the surgery and recovery.
